Be Realistic about Your Home Remodel Timeline

Many homeowners and experienced contractors who have completed home remodels have noted the importance of setting a realistic timeline and budget. Knowing where you are starting and where you are heading in the process takes out the guesswork and any related anxiety that may arise.

It can help to plan for unexpected issues that may arise once work begins. Unexpected issues and changes of plan do not always happen, but it can be helpful to have realistic expectations ahead of time for when they do. Even though experienced contractors can work efficiently and are skilled at their craft, sometimes homeowners can expect a faster timeline than is reasonable. Discussing a realistic timeline for your home remodel with your contractor ahead of time is important to be on the same page.

Then, when unexpected issues do arise, communication will be your biggest ally. A quality craftsman will be open and transparent with any changes and will also take the time to listen to your concerns or wishes.

At Riverbend Renovations, past customers have appreciated our listening, understanding, and responsive communication.

What Does a Home Remodel Process Look Like in Central Connecticut?

In the home remodel process in Central Connecticut, project work is only one part of the timeline.

Initial call

Discuss your vision, project scope, and desires with professionals.

Site visit or send photos of the project

Someone will visit your site to get measurements, check for plumbing, electrical, studs, or other structural and space constraints that will determine the feasibility of your project. In some cases, photos of the area will be enough to estimate the labor and material costs and timeline of the project.

Deliver estimate, sign contract, and schedule project

The contractor will calculate the labor and material costs and the estimated timeline of your project. At this stage, you can discuss any necessary material or process changes that could increase or decrease your costs or timeline, if possible. A start date will also be agreed upon, so you know what to expect.

Work begins

From one day to six months and beyond, this stage is where the actual renovation work happens on your home remodel.

Finish work and clean up

Trim will be reinstalled along with shelves or any other touch-ups, like painting, that need to occur to make your project look complete. The worksite will also be cleaned up and ready for you to begin using your new space.

At Riverbend Renovations, finishing work and a clean worksite are top priorities for us. We don't want to leave a second of extra work for you to outsource or do yourself.

How Long Does a Home Remodel Take in Central Connecticut?

The timeline of a home remodel in Central Connecticut depends on the size and scope of the project, the complexity of the design, and how much you want to change. Common renovation projects done and their timelines are listed here.

Bathroom Remodel - 1 to 4 weeks

How long does a bathroom remodel take? Time varies from around 1 to 4 weeks. Bathroom build-outs can be complex when changing all fixtures, cabinets, hardware, and plumbing, or they can be more streamlined, such as installing a new sink and vanity, or upgrading a shower and tub combo. Changes in structural design will take longer, and any unexpected situations with plumbing can alter the timeline.

Kitchen Remodel - 1 to 4 weeks

A kitchen remodel timeline varies based on the scope of the project and the complexity of the details. Removing a load-bearing wall to create an open concept while adding custom cabinets to fit the new space will be on the longer end, while projects like new countertops, new cabinets, or replacing fixtures are shorter. Unexpected work could be found in necessary electrical or plumbing changes once the kitchen remodel has begun.

Basement Remodel - 2 weeks to 2 months

A basement remodel in Central Connecticut can take a few weeks if you are simply finishing out the space to make a home gym or playroom. Longer projects include adding a bathroom or adding rooms.

Whole-home Remodel - 3 - 6 months

The scope of work, design complexity, house size, and any additions or structural changes greatly impact the length of a whole-home remodel timeline.

Finish carpentry - 2 days to 2 months

When it comes to finish carpentry, cabinet refinishing or trim installation can take a couple of days, adding built-ins to a wall or building and installing custom cabinets can take upwards of 8 weeks.

Plan for Temporary Living during your Home Remodel

While some projects can go on inside your home without interrupting your flow of life, others will disrupt key functional areas in your home. How do you plan for temporary changes during your home remodel? You may need to decide if you will stay in place, make temporary changes to your living arrangements within the house, or if you will stay elsewhere while the renovations take place.  How to know if you should stay, rearrange, or go? Let’s find out.

Stay In Place

  • Work is localized to a low-flow area of your home

  • Custom work will be built outside your home and then installed

  • The remodel timeline is short

Make Temporary Changes

  • One high-flow area of the house is being renovated, but other areas are unaffected

  • The remodel timeline is a few weeks

Stay Elsewhere

  • If kitchens, bathrooms, and bedrooms are all being remodeled

  • If electrical or plumbing work makes staying unsafe

Working closely with your builder will make sure you have a clear plan in place. A contractor with good communication will make sure your needs are met, if that means working in localized areas of the house or bringing in a larger crew to get it done faster. Riverbend Renovations has an understanding and responsive team and will help make your housing plans with you.

Preparing Your Home for a Remodel

While you are preparing for your home transformation, you can prepare the area. Some things to clear and plan for:

Declutter the Area

Clear away items in the remodel area and in any pathways from the home entry to the remodel location for hauling lumber, fixtures, and tools.

Move Furniture

If there are any large furniture pieces that you do not want to be disturbed by the construction process, temporarily relocate them to another part of the room or house. Any entry tables, free-standing kitchen carts, dressers, or chairs near or in the remodel bathroom. This will ensure efficient work times for the remodel team.

Define Access Points

Plan and communicate entry points with your renovator. Let them know the best access into the house for traffic and hauling materials. Inform them about dogs or other pets if entering through the back yard.

All planning and clearing of the work area will improve efficiency and ensure a smooth work timeline for your home remodel.
